MediaTek, the Taiwan headquartered semiconductor company, is keen to break the price barrier for entry levels smartphones. Micromax and Spice, two India based vendors already expressed their interest in MediaTek MT6577 dual core chip. Currently, there is no dual core processor powered handset is available in sub-$200 segment. Spice is working on Mi-500 with MT6577 while Micromax is about to release a dual core version of A90 along with two other handsets. Hopefully, the dual core A90 will hit Indian market by the end of this month.
MediaTek MT6577 couples two Cortex A9 cores with PowerVR Series5 SGX GPU based on ARM architecture. On board 3G/HSPA modem and support of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich makes this chip a worthy one in pocket friendly budget. The chip contains everything that are required to make fullest entertainment. MT6577 supports up to 8 MP camera, full HD video recording at 1080p, HD display 720p, dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS navigation support and on board FM radio.

We can see the people show more confidence in dual core smartphones rather than single core ones. Now abundance of sub-$200 USD handsets will pose real threat to high end smartphones. As said earlier, Micromax, Spice have started working on MediaTek MT6577, soon some devices will be unveiled. It’s interesting to see how Micromax A90 negotiates with this all-in-one budget friendly powerhouse. More vendors to join this list soon for sure.
