Samsung Galaxy S Advance vs Sony Xperia P

Samsung Galaxy S Advance vs Sony Xperia P -Samsung Galaxy S Advance belongs to Samsung’s most successful ‘S’ series. Currently the droid stands third from the top of the table just after Galaxy S III and Galaxy S II. You can easily understand it has solid built in quality, powerful features and attractive design. On the other hand, Sony Xperia P is too comes with brilliant specs and light weight design. Before I compare anything I must say, this comparison is going to be really really close. You have to study specs carefully before you can eliminate one of these two.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: Dimension- 123.2 x 63 x 9.7 mm, weight-120 gm
Sony Xperia P: Dimension-122 x 59.5 x 10.5 mm, weight-120 gm

You can see that Galaxy S Advance is slightly thinner but Sony Xperia P is smaller in overall size comparison. Both weights same around 120 gm.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Sony Xperia P: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Currently both these droids are running with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sony will officially roll over Android 4.0 ICS upgrade for Xperia P. Samsung is still to announce anything about upgrading Galaxy S Advance.

3. Processor

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: 1 GHz dual core Cortex A9 processor and Mali 400-MP GPU
Sony Xperia P: 1 GHz dual core NOVAThor U8500 chipset processor and Mali 400-MP GPU

You can see both these droids are powered by dual core 1 GHz processor and Mali-400 separate GPU unit. Multitasking is faster and better.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: 4.0 inch Super AMOLED touch screen, 480×800 px, 233 ppi
Sony Xperia P: 4.0 inch, 480×800 px, 275 ppi

Samsung successfully used Super AMOLED type display in Galaxy S II, S III with good effect. This type of display is more vivid and saves battery power considerably. Galaxy S Advance is launched with similar type of display. No doubt is is better than Xperia P’s LED-backlit LCD type display. But Xperia P has higher pixel density in display which means more prominent display. Both support 480×800 px display resolution. Accelerometer, proximity, gyroscope, magnetometer sensor are useful that are present in both droid.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: Samsung TouchWiz UI
Sony Xperia P: Sony Timescape UI powered by Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine, WhiteMagic technology

Samsung TouchWiz is one of the best user interfaces of recent times. Samsung used the same interface in all high end droids. No doubt it is one of the best in business. On the other hand, Sony Timescape UI is Sony’s own UI. It is hard to tell which one is best.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: 768 MB RAM, 16 GB ROM, 32 GB micro SD card support
Sony Xperia P: 1 GB RAM, 16 GB ROM, No micro SD card support

Xperia P has more amount of RAM which means better processing power. Since both these droids are run by similar processor Xperia P gets a slight edge over Galaxy S Advance. Both have 16 GB on board storage (slightly less than 16 GB) which is impressive. Lack of micro SD card slot in Xperia P is a serious issue. I think, it is always better to have a micro SD card in your smartphone so that you can take backup, install apps in SD card.

You can see Sony Xperia P is clear winner in primary camera segment. It has 8 MP auto focus primary camera that comes with LED flash, face detection, smile detection, touch focus, 3D sweep panorama. The camera records HD video at 1080p. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S Advance sports 5 MP primary camera that has all the features Xperia P has, it only lacks 3D sweep panorama feature. Also the video recording in S Advance is 720p which is inferior as compared to Xperia P. In secondary camera segment Galaxy S Advance gets an edge over Xperia P with it’s 1.3 MP camera over Xperia P’s VGA camera.

8. Battery

Galaxy S Advance has powerful battery and lasts really long. It lasts for up to 570 hrs in 2G network and 550 hrs in 3G network. It provides talk time of 15 hrs and 7 hrs and 20 min in 2G and 3G network respectively. On the other hand, Xperia P is not that impressive in this segment. It lasts for 470 hrs and 475 hrs in 2G and 3G network respectively. The talk time of Xperia P is considerably less than Galaxy S Advance. It hardly delivers 6 hrs and 5 hrs of talk time in 2G and 3G network respectively.

Both these droids operate on quad band GSM and quad band HSDPA network. In GSM network Xperia P can achieve up to 100 Kbps GPRS and 296 Kbps EDGE speed. Galaxy S Advance can hit up to 237 Kbps speed. In 3G HSDPA network both can achieve up to 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps speed. In connectivity segment, both are launched with Wi-Fi,Bluetooth and micro USB. NFC in Galaxy S Advance is an optional feature whereas in Xperia P it’s an integrated feature. For positioning system A-GPS navigation support is present.

10. Multimedia

Music,video player and stereo FM Radio with RDS are there in both these droids as entertainment options. Both support MP3/WAV/eAAC+/AC3/FLAC audio formats. Rich video formats like DivX and XviD are supported only by Galaxy S Advance. On the other hand, xLOUD sound technology in Xperia P produce superior sound in loudspeaker as well as in headphone.

Sony Xperia P: Rs.24,999/-

Samsung Galaxy S Advance is tagged at 300 EURO or Rs. 22,500/- in Indian currency whereas Sony Xperia P is slightly costlier and tagged at 350 Euro or Rs. 24,999/- in India.
